It would be fair to assume that this was a monument to Dorset's most famous son Thomas Hardy - well no (and yes!).
It is actually a monument to Sir Thomas Masterton Hardy who was captain of the HMS victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. He is the Hardy of 'Kiss me Hardy' fame.
